New York, New York
Advanced participation in live theatre for people who are hard of hearing or deaf through captioning and sign interpreting of performances on Broadway.

VSA Arts of Pennsylvania/Amaryllis Theatre Company - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Built awareness of the work of artists with disabilities as well as audiences for accessible programs and venues through Independence Starts Here: A Festival of Disability Arts and Culture. This month long festival took place in 70 venues in Philadelphia.

Cabell Wayne Association of the Blind - Huntington, West Virginia
Offered individualized instruction in computer technology to 25 adults who are blind.

Dance Detour - Chicago, Illinois
Presented the premier of a dance created for this integrated wheelchair dance company by Charlene Curtiss of Light Motion.

DeafWest Theatre - Los Angeles, California
Provided the ASL translation of a new musical called “Waking Beauty” to be premiered at the Kirk Douglas Theatre

Fountain Gallery - New York, New York
Supported “Self Portraits”, an exhibit by artists with psychiatric disabilities.

Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired - San Francisco, California
Encouraged the work of professional blind or visually impaired artists through the “Insights” Exhibit.

Theatre by the Blind - New York, New York
Expanded the theatre company to include people with diverse disabilities and perform a play by a playwright with a disability.

VSA arts of Georgia - Atlanta, Georgia
Supported the “Make Your Mark” exhibit for professional artists with disabilities to create pieces of artwork in the Arts for All gallery.

Dancing Wheels/Professional Flair - Cleveland, Ohio
Supported the National Integrated Dance Festival Tour in which Dancing Wheels, AXIS Dance and Full Radius Dance performed in Cleveland, Ohio, Atlanta, Georgia and Oakland, California.

Out North - Anchorage, Alaska
Developed and promoted the work of artists with disabilities in Alaska.

Pasadena Playhouse - Pasadena, California
Provided the ASL translation for "Open Window", a new play collaboration between DeafWest and the Pasadena Playhouse.

Rubicon Theatre - Ventura, California
Supported training about the Americans with Disabilities Act to create better access for people with disabilities.

Theatre By the Blind - New York, New York
Supported their performance of "Oedipus" at the Fourth International Blind Theatre Festival in Croatia.

The ARC of Wood County - Parkersburg, West Virginia
Supported the West Virginia People First Convention – “The Choices we Make Shape our Lives” which provided people with disabilities with the skills necessary to advocate for themselves through voting and participating in the governing of communities.

Black Hills Workshop - Rapid City, South Dakota
Presented “Making Dreams Come True”, an exhibition of digital photography portraits of people with disabilities by people with disabilities.

Flynn Center for the Performing Arts - Burlington, Vermont
Provided support for AXIS Dance to do a regional tour in New England of six sites in six weeks.

HAI-Hospital Audiences, Inc - New York, New York
Provided real time theater description to Broadway and off Broadway shows for people who are blind and visually impaired through the DESCRIBE program.

Imagine Enterprises - Seabrook, Texas
Connected people with disabilities to legislators to impact public perception, policy and funding.

Rose Resnick Lighthouse for the Blind - San Francisco, California
Supported the juried exhibition, “Insights”, which promoted the work of artists who are blind in a professional, accessible art exhibition.

Seattle Lighthouse-The Lighthouse for the Blind - Seattle, Washington
Brought technology access and independence to 35 DeafBlind adults through assistive technology training.

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital - Boston, Massachusetts
Created a web based information technology and education program for people with disabilities.

Victory Gardens Theater - Chicago, Illinois
Supported the production of John Belluso's “Pyretown”, an original play authored by a playwright with a disability and exploring disability themes.

VSA arts of Minnesota - Minneapolis, Minnesota
Provided audio description training for describers across Minnesota in order to increase access to Minnesota's arts opportunities for patrons who are blind or low vision.

Yale Repertory Theatre - New Haven, Connecticut
Provided audio description training for students and community members to provide better access to people who are blind.

Access Living of Metropolitan Chicago - Chicago, Illinois
Supported the Civil Rights Team that focused on educating Chicago’s disability community on legal protection as well as providing legal advocacy for selected individual and systemic cases of discrimination.

Amaryllis Theatre Company - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Supported greater access to performances for people with disabilities through a conference on accessibility for theatres in Philadelphia.

American Association of People with Disabilities - Washington, DC
Supported the collaboration conference of AAPD and NOW with a concentration on empowering and educating emerging female leaders with disabilities about their civil rights.

Aquarium of the Pacific - Long Beach, California
Oversaw the creation of an ADA plan and provided audio description of the aquarium exhibits for better access to people with disabilities.

Arts and Services for the Disabled - Long Beach, California
Provided access to 17 visual arts workshops for 255 adults with disabilities in the Los Angeles area in ongoing community sponsored art classes.

Lake County Center for Independent Living - Mundelein, Illinois
Addressed issues that impact people with disabilities locally as well as at the state and national levels through an intensive organization and education of people with disabilities.

Los Angeles Radio Reading Service - Los Angeles, California
Created new methods of training and mentoring new audio describers and expanded audio description in Los Angeles through enrolling more theatres.

Protection and Advocacy - Sacramento, California
Provided support of the statewide RESPECTability conference to improve coordination of the disability community in California to support the civil rights of persons with disabilities and increase access to healthcare, education and other services.

Savannah College of Art and Design: Department of Deaf Services - Savannah, Georgia
Trained and certified 15 interpreters to serve hearing impaired artists attending the college as well as people in the community.

Welcome Change Productions - New York, New York
Made the Academy Award nominated short film "The Collector of Bedford Street" accessible to people who are blind through audio description.

Women's Law and Public Policy Center - Washington, DC
Provided real time captioning for the Berg Fellows to enable them to have better access to their work at the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

Created the world's only Summer Shakespeare Festival in American Sign Language and spoken English.

Opportunity Resources Inc. - Missoula, Montana
Created “About Faces”: a community based series of integrated art workshops in the genre of self-portraits for women with disabilities.

Added 6 performances per production to expand audiences.

UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center - Santa Barbara, California
“Extra/ordinary Bodies: Dance Beyond Disability”: Presented a festival of performances, residencies and outreach activities around dancers with disabilities.

VSA Arts of Georgia - Atlanta, Georgia
Led an ADA workshop for art organizations on access issues and conducted Audio Description training for new audio describers.

VSA Arts of New Hampshire - Concord, New Hampshire
Assisted the New Hampshire cultural community to identify and improve physical and programmatic access for people with disabilities.

VSA Arts of Texas - Austin, Texas
Planned a statewide series of ADA training for arts organizations in Texas to support services for people with disabilities.

Western Law Center for Disability Rights - Los Angeles, California
Matched people with disabilities with people in the world of business and government for a day of mentorship that was part of the national Disability Mentoring Day.

Advocated for women with disabilities on issues in Congress pertaining to them.

The Mark Taper Forum and the Ahmanson Theatre hosted their first audio description season of performances for patrons who are blind in 2000-2001.

Corporation on Disabilities and Telecommunications - Berkeley, California
Provided sign interpreting services for the Superfest Festival of Media Arts Awards.

DREDF-Berkeley, California
Hosted the first International Conference on Policy for People with Disabilities in the fall of 2000.

Health Resources for People with Disabilities - Chicago, Illinois
Produced the Resourceful Woman Newsletter for women with disabilities.

Santa Barbara City College - Santa Barbara, California
The ELA Foundation joined with the Santa Barbara City College and the Access Theatre Endowment Fund to present David Roche in “The Church of 80% Sincerity”.

Santa Barbara Zoo - Santa Barbara, California
Enabled the Zoo to be more ADA compliant for people with disabilities.

Stepping Stones Growth Center - San Leandro, California
The Artful Steps project of the Stepping Stones Growth Center enabled people with disabilities to experience artwork in the community and explore their own artistic path.

The Center for Research on Women with Disabilities - Houston, Texas
Provided financial assistance for women with disabilities to a conference to further health and wellness research.

The SEED Institute - Irvine, California
Continued the micro business training program, providing more opportunities for women with disabilities to start their own businesses.

Westaf - Denver, Colorado
The Western States Federation, in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts, held an ADA training for 504/ADA coordinators from state arts councils in the region.

Project Imagine Art supported artists with disabilities by insuring their participation in community art classes, membership organizations, exhibits and other activities.

Arizona Theatre Co. - Tucson, Arizona
Created ArtAbility, a cooperative of Arts Councils and arts organizations that provided arts access services for audiences throughout Arizona.

Art and Soul Festival - Los Angeles, California
Sponsored the attendance and performances of artists from around the world at this International VSA Festival.

Brought the “Portrait of Spirit” exhibit of people with disabilities to the Art and Soul Festival.

Arts in Action - Adelaide, Australia
Presented “Changing Faces”, a two-person comedy cabaret show starring David Roche and Alan Shain during the High Beam Festival.

Dance Umbrella - Boston, Massachusetts
Researched new ways to bring integrated wheelchair dance to audiences everywhere.

Educational Equity Concepts - New York, New York
“Building Community: A Manuel Exploring Issues of Women and Disability” was updated and distributed by Educational Equity Concepts.

International Dance Sensation - Santa Barbara, California
Sponsored the performance of Light Motion and CANDOCO in an evening of integrated wheelchair dance at the Lobero Theatre.

Los Angeles Radio Reading Service - West Hills, California
Provided training for new audio describers to describe local theatrical events in Los Angeles.

The SEED Institute - Irvine, California
Trained people with disabilities in small business management.

Society for Disability Arts and Culture - Vancouver, British Columbia
The KickstART Arts Festival received strategic planning assistance towards their goal of holding an arts festival for artists with disabilities in 2001.

Spring Meadow Resources - Helena, Montana
Initiated the Virtual Arts Center to partner with local arts organizations and human service agencies to offer inclusive art workshops in various locations in the community.

UCLA - UAP Program - Los Angeles, California
The National Arts and Disabilities Center at the University Affiliated Program at UCLA transcribed the Association for Theatre and Accessibility Conference held in May of 1999 and put it on their website.

Whirlwind Women - San Francisco, California
Whirlwind Women, (an offshoot of Whirlwind Wheelchair International), helped women in Uganda create wheelchairs out of materials that are found locally.

Women and Philanthropy - Washington, DC
Women with disabilities who are advocates, educators and professionals created a platform around their issues and presented it to funders from all over the United States.

World Institute on Disability - Oakland, California
Five research agencies in the San Francisco Bay area convened an international conference to discuss current research trends among people with disabilities.

Expanded their advocacy program to create more funding opportunities for medical treatment, civil rights and return to work for women with AIDS.

AXIS Dance Company - Oakland, California
Enhanced their artistic repertoire and expanded integrated dance education in their community.

Corporation on Disabilities and Telecommunications - Berkeley, California
Presented Superfest XIX, a film festival, by, for and about people with disabilities.

Forum on AIDS and Disabilities - San Francisco, California
Brought organizations and funders that work with people with disabilities and people with AIDS together to discuss common concerns and create a stronger network.

Gallaudet University - Washington, DC
The Young Scholars program at Gallaudet gave students with disabilities a direct experience of studying another culture and relating to people with and without disabilities in that culture.

Ohio Women with Disabilities Network - Columbus, Ohio
Created a newsletter called “Window on Wellness”, which was dedicated to educating women with disabilities on healthcare issues.

Other Voices - Los Angeles, California
Other Voices artists created “Helen and Frida”, a performance piece written by Anne Finger involving four women with disabilities in a theatrical dance around the meeting of Helen Keller and Frida Kahlo.

San Francisco Women's Centers - Oakland, California
The Changing Borders Conference for Women with Disabilities brought together women with disabilities at various ages and stages of careers and lives to mentor with each other.

Santa Barbara City College Theatre - Santa Barbara, California
Provided audio description to patrons who were blind.

Southern Africa Federation of the Disabled - Zimbabwe, South Africa
Enabled a representative from the Organization of Rural Associations for Progress to initiate a program about the equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities.

University of Southern Maine - Gorham, Maine
Worked through the web to students with disabilities to school counselors, women with disabilities in the community and women pursuing non-traditional careers.

Victory Gardens Theatre - Chicago, Illinois
Expanded their access to artists with disabilities by presenting A “History of Bowling” written and directed by people with disabilities.

Women's Y - Wichita, Texas
Initiated “A New Year, A New You” to enhance the self-esteem of women with disabilities by teaching them about diet, exercise and how to be their best selves.

Enabled people with disabilities in the United States to have more access to jobs, education, and a better way of life.

Association for Theatre and Accessibility - Los Angeles, California
Held a conference for artists with disabilities, agents, casting directors and other administrators in the arts field.

California Task Force on Women, Disabilities and Health - Los Angeles, California
Formed a clearinghouse for women with disabilities to obtain information on health, education, and other resources in the state of California.

Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum - New York, New York
The “Unlimited By Design” exhibit explored the impact of design on our daily lives by presenting services and an environment that enables everyone to live and work independently.

Dance Detour - Chicago, Illinois
Expanded their dance and education program for dancers with and without disabilities in Chicago.

Interfaith Center of Corporate Responsibility - New York, New York
The ELA Foundation joined with other foundations, corporations and organizations to explore how health care issues and policies can better serve people with disabilities.

International Leadership Forum for Women With Disabilities - Washington, DC
Women with disabilities from around the world met to discuss their lives, their concerns and their cultures and find mutual answers while discovering the next steps to make connections in the future.

Mobility International - Eugene, Oregon
Hosted a conference in 1998 on credit and micro enterprise for women with disabilities based on the outcome of the International Leadership Forum for Women with Disabilities.

Southern Arts Federation - Atlanta, Georgia
Southern Arts Federation and Arts for All in Georgia trained presenters and artists with disabilities about accessibility and touring.

UCLA Armand Hammer Museum - Los Angeles, California
Upgraded the performing space of the Armand Hammer Museum in order for artists with disabilities to perform there.

Women's Foreign Policy Group - New York, New York
“Post Beijing: Addressing Disabilities in War-Torn and Developing Nations” was an introduction to the International Leadership Forum for Women with Disabilities and assisted them to promote leadership, participation and visibility of women in international affairs to the public through this forum.

 

Grants 1996

Georgia Council for the Arts - Atlanta, Georgia
Premiered “Portrait of Spirit: One Story at a Time”, a photo exhibit and book that portrayed the lives and accomplishments of 25 people with disabilities in Georgia. It was held at Georgia Tech during the Cultural Paralympiad celebration of the Paralympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

Special Audiences - Atlanta, Georgia
Presented “Storm Reading”, an autobiographical play written and performed by Neil Marcus. This was sponsored by Special Audiences and presented by Access Theatre during the Cultural Paralympiad.

The American Place Theatre - New York, New York
Presented “Spoke Man” at the American Place Theatre. “Spoke Man” was written by John Hockenberry and chronicled his journey through life as a reporter and a person with a disability.

The Atlanta Paralympic Organizing Committee - Atlanta, Georgia
Send a Kid to the 1996 Paralympic Games made it possible for children to attend the Paralympics and see the prowess of athletes with disabilities from around the world.

Grants 1995

Southeast Center for Contemporary Art- Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Provided an accessible catalog for the “Civil Rights Now” exhibit.

The Atlanta Paralympic Organizing Committee- Atlanta, Georgia
Brought the National Theatre of the Deaf to do a performance of “An Italian Straw Hat” as a kick-off to the Cultural Paralympiad.
